Die Tourneen von Grigory Sokolov sind legendär. Obwohl seine Programme oft bis zur letzten Minute ein Geheimnis bleiben, strömt das Publikum in Scharen zu seinen Auftritten. Jeder weiß, dass ein aufregendes Musikerlebnis wartet. Deutsche Grammophon – das Label, bei dem Sokolov vor einer Dekade einen Exklusivvertrag unterzeichnete – hat eine Reihe von ihnen aufgezeichnet. Der jüngste Mitschnitt entstand im Sommer 2023 in Spanien bei zwei Konzerten des Meisterpianisten.

Grigory Sokolov – Purcell & Mozart erscheint am 30. August 2024 digital und als 2-CD-Set, am 11. Oktober folgt eine 3-LP-Edition. Sokolovs Lesart von Purcells »Cibell« ist ab heute, dem 2. August, als Stream und Download erhältlich und wird von einem Performance-Video begleitet. Seine Interpretation von Mozarts Adagio in h-Moll kommt am 16. August heraus. Ein weiteres Video wird am selben Tag wie das Album veröffentlicht und zeigt Sokolovs Interpretation von Purcells Round O. Überdies feiert am 12. Oktober das ganze Programm auf STAGE+ Premiere.

Der erste Part des Albums – Musik von Henry Purcell, einem der bedeutendsten Komponisten des englischen Hochbarocks – wurde am 18. August 2023 beim Festival Internacional Santander aufgenommen ebenso wie die fünf Zugaben, die das Programm ergänzen. Purcell ist neu auf dem Spielplan des Pianisten. Er entschied sich für drei Moll-Suiten aus A Choice Collection of Lessons for the Cembalo or Spinnet, ein Jahr nach Purcells Tod veröffentlicht, und sechs weitere kurze Klavierwerke, die er allesamt ohne Zwischenapplaus zu einem Zyklus vereint.

Sokolov nutzt die Vielseitigkeit des Flügels, um die verborgenen Nuancen der Suiten herauszuarbeiten. Sie zeigen, wie Purcell die französischen und italienischen Einflüsse seiner Zeit adaptierte, um zu seinem eigenen unvergleichlichen Ausdruck zu finden. Perfekt fängt der Pianist auch die unterschiedlichen Stimmungen der anderen Stücke ein. »Ground in Gamut ist sorglos und unbeschwert«, schreibt Bachtrack über das Recital des Repertoires in Aix-en-Provence. »In den Irish und Scotch Tunes lebt und lacht das Klavier, mal entrückt, mal zärtlich melancholisch, während dem Trumpet Tune Sokolovs dynamischer Anschlag Noblesse und Momentum verleiht.«

Der zweite Part des Albums, zwei Tage zuvor in San Sebastián beim Musikfestival Quincena aufgenommen, ist Werken von Mozart gewidmet. Beredte Kontraste kennzeichnen Sokolovs Spiel der Klaviersonate in B-Dur, KV 333. Der meist heitere Charakter des Werks wird durch Momente der Erregung, der Dunkelheit und der Dramatik gestört, vor allem im Finale, das eine konzertantgleiche Kadenz enthält.

Es folgt das Adagio in h-Moll, KV 540, 1788 zeitgleich zum Don Giovanni auf dem Höhepunkt von Mozarts Kreativität geschrieben, ein düsteres, expressives Meisterwerk. Sokolovs forschende Interpretation seiner Zweideutigkeiten beschließt das eigentliche Konzertprogramm mit einem leisen, offenen Ausgang.

Eine reiche Auswahl an Zugaben gehört zu jedem Sokolov-Konzert. Hier rahmt er Chopins »Regentropfen«-Prélude op. 28/15 und seine f-Moll-Mazurka op. 63/2 mit Musik von Rameau, bevor er mit einem der Präludien aus J.S. Bachs Wohltemperiertem Klavier (in der Bearbeitung von Siloti in h-Moll) zum Schluss kommt und einen begeisterten Applaus des Publikums erntet.

Sokolov spielt sein derzeitiges Recitalprogramm mit Werken von Bach, Chopin und Schumann beim Festival International de Piano de La Roque d’Anthéron in Aix-en-Provence (3. August), bei den Salzburger Festspielen (5. August), beim Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival (7. August) und beim ARTissimo Festival in Lettland (12. und 13. August). Seine nächste Tournee mit einem neuen Programm beginnt am 27. Oktober in Stockholm. Bis zum Jahresende folgen weitere Termine in Dortmund, Luzern, Bologna, Turin, Warschau, Luxemburg und Brüssel.

The recital tours of Grigory Sokolov have become the stuff of legend. Even though his programmes are often shrouded in mystery until the last minute, audiences flock to hear him perform, knowing that, whatever the repertoire, they are guaranteed a thrilling musical experience. While Sokolov no longer goes into the studio, since signing with Deutsche Grammophon a decade ago he has curated an acclaimed series of live recordings for the Yellow Label. The latest of these was captured at two recitals he gave in Spain last summer.

Grigory Sokolov – Purcell & Mozart will be released digitally and as a 2-CD set on 30 August 2024, with a 3-LP version to follow on 11 October. The pianist’s interpretation of Purcell’s Trumpet Tune “Cibell” is out to stream/download today, 2 August, and is accompanied by a video. His rendition of Mozart’s Adagio in B minor will be available from 16 August, while another video will be issued on the same day as the album, featuring Sokolov’s take on Purcell’s Round O. The full recital progamme will be premiered on STAGE+ on 12 October.

The first half of the album, presenting music by the 17th-century English composer Henry Purcell, was recorded at Sokolov’s recital at the Santander International Festival on 18 August 2023, as were the five encores that round off the programme. For his focus on Purcell, a composer new to his public performances, the artist wove together an uninterrupted sequence made up of three minor-key suites from A Choice Collection of Lessons for the Harpsichord or Spinnet, published a year after Purcell’s death, and six other short keyboard works.

With clarity of articulation and graceful ornamentation, Sokolov uses the versatility of the grand piano to bring out hidden nuances of the poised, elegant suites, which reveal how Purcell adapted the French and Italian styles of his day to create his own personal idiom. Then, as noted by Bachtrack in its review of the Aix-en-Provence recital, the pianist captures the different moods of the other pieces to perfection. “Ground in Gamut is carefree and lighthearted. In the Irish and Scotch Tunes the piano lives and laughs, by turns bucolic and tenderly melancholy, while Sokolov’s dynamic touch brings nobility and a sense of momentum to the Trumpet Tune.”

The second half of the programme, recorded two days earlier in San Sebastián, as part of the city’s Quincena Musical festival, consists of two works by Mozart. Sokolov creates eloquent contrasts in the Piano Sonata in B flat major, K 333, whose predominantly sunny nature is at times interrupted by moments of agitation, darkness and drama, notably in the finale, which includes a concerto-style cadenza.

He ends the programme proper of his recital with the Adagio in B minor, K 540, written in 1788, when Mozart was at the height of his compositional powers. A contemporary of the opera Don Giovanni, it is a sombre, expressive masterpiece, and Sokolov’s searching interpretation of its ambiguities bring the second half to a quiet, questioning conclusion.

A generous array of encores form a key aspect of the Sokolov recital ritual. On this occasion, he frames Chopin’s Prelude, Op. 28 No. 15 “Raindrop” and Mazurka in F minor with music by Rameau, before ending with one of the Preludes from J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier (as arranged in the key of B minor by Siloti) and earning one final enthusiastic ovation from the audience.

Sokolov will perform his current recital programme, featuring works by Bach, Chopin and Schumann, at the La Roque d’Anthéron International Piano Festival in Aix-en-Provence (3 August), Salzburg Festival (5 August), Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival (7 August) and the Artissimo Festival in Latvia (12 and 13 August). He will begin touring the new season’s repertoire, yet to be revealed, in Stockholm on 27 October, with further dates in Dortmund, Lucerne, Bologna, Turin, Warsaw, Luxembourg and Brussels before the end of the year.
