8. Juni 2021 – Gustav Mahlers gewaltige Achte Symphonie umspannt ein Universum von Emotionen – intime Einkehr ebenso wie überwältigende Orchesterklänge und vokale Kraft. Das imposante Werk ist nun in einer Interpretation von Gustavo Dudamel und dem Los Angeles Philharmonic zu hören, live aufgenommen in der Walt Disney Concert Hall (am 30./31. Mai und 2. Juni 2019) mit einer Vielzahl von Chören und einer meisterhaften Riege von Solisten. Gustav Mahler – Symphony No. 8, das heute auf allen relevanten digitalen Plattformen erscheint, dokumentiert eine einzigartige Aufführung, die das 100-jährige Jubiläum des LA Phil im Jahr 2019 zu einem glanzvollen Abschluss brachte.

Nachdem Apple Music 3D-Audio mit Unterstützung für Dolby Atmos angekündigt hat, gibt Deutsche Grammophon nun bekannt, dass Hörer sowohl die neueste symphonische Veröffentlichung als auch den gesamten Katalog von Gustavo Dudamel und dem LA Phil in diesem bahnbrechenden neuen Standard der Audioerfahrung genießen können. Alben wie Andrew Norman: Sustain und Charles Ives · Complete Symphonies, die 2020 und 2021 in der Kategorie Orchester mit einem Grammy ausgezeichnet wurden, zählen ebenso dazu wie wegweisende Veröffentlichungen des letzten Jahrzehnts, darunter Celebrating John Williams, Tschaikowskis Nussknacker, Strawinskys Feuervogel und Debussys La Mer, außerdem große symphonische Partituren von Bartók, Berlioz und Brahms sowie Meisterwerke von John Adams.

Das neue Album gründet auf einem Fundament, das Dudamel bereits früh in seiner Amtszeit als Musikalischer und Künstlerischer Direktor des LA Phil legte. Das Mahler-Projekt, ein fast übermenschliches Unterfangen, in dessen Rahmen 2012 die neun Symphonien des Komponisten innerhalb nur eines Monats auf die Bühne gebracht wurden, erregte weltweit Aufmerksamkeit und begeisterte die Kritik. Seither stand Mahlers Musik sowohl im eigenen Haus als auch auf Tournee auf dem Programm. Die tiefe Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk des Komponisten hat den Weg bereitet für die packende Aufführung seiner Achten Symphonie im Mai 2019, »ein in diesem Leben einmaliges Erlebnis«, urteilte Stage and Cinema.

Schon bei ihrer Uraufführung im Jahr 1910 war die Komposition als »Symphonie der Tausend« bekannt, doch auch die beeindruckende Zahl von 346 Interpreten in Dudamels Aufführung wurde dem Werk mehr als gerecht. Neben dem LA Phil wirkten der Los Angeles Master Chorale mit, der Pacific Chorale, der Los Angeles Children’s Chorus sowie der National Children’s Chorus (und ihre jeweiligen künstlerischen Leiter: Grant Gershon, Robert Istad, Fernando Malvar-Ruiz und Luke McEndarfer), außerdem die Solisten Tamara Wilson, Leah Crocetto, Erin Morley, Mihoko Fujimura, Tamara Mumford, Simon O’Neill, Ryan McKinny und Morris Robinson.

Gustavo Dudamel, so die Los Angeles Times, ließ im ersten Satz »Orchester, Chor und Solisten Phrasen formen, als wären es Fragen, die man in aller Tiefe ergründen müsse. Ein Gedanke folgte auf den nächsten wie in einer unerbittlichen Auseinandersetzung, und am Ende war die Erregung nicht nur körperlich, sondern wie eine Entdeckung des Unvermeidlichen und Unaussprechlichen.« Andere Kritiker bewegte der schiere »Nervenkitzel« (San Francisco Classical Voice) oder »der Überschwang, die Freude und das Spielerische« des Dirigenten im »vollkommenen Navigieren« der Kräfte (ConcertoNet.com).

Mahler forderte mit seinem Werk symphonische Konventionen heraus, indem er es für acht Solosänger, zwei monumentale gemischte Erwachsenenchöre und einen Kinderchor schrieb und das Stück in zwei Sätze aufteilte. Dem ersten Satz legte er den lateinischen Hymnus Veni creator spiritus aus dem neunten Jahrhundert zugrunde, im zweiten Teil vertonte er Worte aus der Schlussszene von Goethes Tragödie Faust. Zusammen symbolisieren sie die Kraft der göttlichen Schöpfung und die Erlösung des Menschen durch Liebe – Themen, die Gustavo Dudamel und seine Partner in feinen Details erkunden.

Die Symphonie hatte Mahler bereits im Sommer 1906 im Kopf. »Es war wie eine blitzartige Vision«, erzählte er seinem Biografen, »so ist das Ganze sofort vor meinen Augen gestanden und ich habe es nur aufzuschreiben gebraucht, so, als ob es mir diktiert worden wäre.« Die vollendete Partitur sei etwas, sagte er, »wogegen all meine anderen Werke nur wie Vorstufen wirken.«

8 June 2021 – Gustav Mahler’s mighty Eighth Symphony spans a universe of emotions, channeled through everything from passages of intimate reflection to overwhelming outbursts of choral and orchestral sound. This extraordinary work can now be heard in a revelatory interpretation from Gustavo Dudamel, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, massed choirs and a masterful assembly of solo voices, recorded live at Walt Disney Concert Hall (30/31 May & 2 June 2019). Set for release today on all relevant digital platforms, Gustav Mahler – Symphony No. 8 documents a landmark performance that brought the LA Phil’s centennial season to a triumphant conclusion in 2019.

Following the announcement from Apple Music that it is introducing Spatial Audio with support for Dolby Atmos, DG is delighted to report that listeners will be able to enjoy both the brand-new release and the entire Yellow Label catalogue of Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil via this revolutionary form of audio experience. Their recordings include the Grammy-winning albums of 2020 and 2021 in the orchestral category – Andrew Norman: Sustain and Charles Ives – Complete Symphonies – as well as landmark releases of the past decade such as Celebrating John Williams, Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, Stravinsky’s The Firebird and Debussy’s La Mer, major symphonic pieces by Bartók, Berlioz and Brahms, and seminal works by John Adams.

This new album builds on foundations set early during Dudamel’s tenure as Music & Artistic Director of the LA Phil. Their Mahler Project, a near-superhuman undertaking that presented the composer’s nine symphonies within a month in 2012, attracted global attention and rave reviews. They have since programmed Mahler’s music at home and on tour, deepening their sense of its meaning and preparing the way for their captivating performance of the Eighth Symphony in May 2019, hailed by Stage and Cinema as “a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Although known since the time of its first performance in 1910 as the “Symphony of a Thousand,” Dudamel’s vision of the work was richly served by a total of 346 performers. The Los Angeles Philharmonic was joined by the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Pacific Chorale, Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, National Children’s Chorus (and their respective artistic directors: Grant Gershon, Robert Istad, Fernando Malvar-Ruiz and Luke McEndarfer) and soloists Tamara Wilson, Leah Crocetto, Erin Morley, Mihoko Fujimura, Tamara Mumford, Simon O’Neill, Ryan McKinny and Morris Robinson.

Gustavo Dudamel, reported the Los Angeles Times, “had the orchestra, chorus and soloists sculpt phrases as though they were questions needing deep investigation. One idea followed the next as in an inexorable argument that, when it reached the end of the movement, was not just physically thrilling but like discovering the inevitable and the ineffable.” Other critics were moved by the interpretation’s “thrills and chills” (San Francisco Classical Voice) and by the “exuberant, joyous and playful” conductor’s “complete control” of his forces (ConcertoNet.com).

Mahler challenged symphonic convention in this work by writing parts for eight solo singers, two monumental mixed adult choruses and children’s choir, and dividing the piece into two movements. He based the first movement on the ninth-century Latin hymn Veni creator spiritus, and set words from the closing scene of Goethe’s verse tragedy Faust as an extended second part. Together they symbolize the power of divine creation and mankind’s redemption through love, themes explored in fine detail by Gustavo Dudamel and his performance partners.

The symphony entered Mahler’s mind almost fully formed during the summer of 1906. “I saw the whole piece immediately before my eyes,” he told his biographer soon after, “and only needed to write it down, as though it were being dictated to me.” The finished score was, he said, “something in comparison with which all the rest of my works are no more than introductions”.
