Deutsche Grammophon veröffentlichte Ende Oktober das Konzeptalbum zu Todd Fields gefeiertem Film TÁR, die cineastische Inszenierung dessen, was der erfolgreiche amerikanische Regisseur »das komplexe Wirrwarr beim Machen von Musik« nennt. Der innovative Soundtrack stellt atemberaubende neue Kompositionen der oscar- und zweifach grammygekrönten DG-Künstlerin Hildur Guðnadóttir vor. Die Werke wurden mit dem London Contemporary Orchestra unter der Leitung von Robert Ames eingespielt. Zu hören sind außerdem Auszüge aus dem Cellokonzert von Elgar – mit der Solistin Sophie Kauer und dem London Symphony Orchestra unter der Leitung von Natalie Murray Beale – und aus der Fünften Symphonie von Mahler mit Cate Blanchett am Pult der Dresdner Philharmonie. Heute erscheint Fields Video zu einem neuen Track von Guðnadóttir: »Mortar«. Die Premiere ist um 17 Uhr auf Variety.com und um 18 Uhr auf dem YouTube-Kanal von Deutsche Grammophon. Ab 11. November wird es auf allen Plattformen zu sehen sein.

Todd Field, bereits dreifach für einen Oscar nominiert, war nicht nur Produzent des Projekts, er schrieb auch das Buch zu TÁR und führte Regie in diesem Film, der von der Komponistin und Dirigentin Lydia Tár handelt, aber auch vom Wesen der Macht und den Folgen ihrer Entfaltung in unserer modernen Gesellschaft. Die zweifach oscargekrönte Cate Blanchett verkörpert die Musikerin.

Um das komplexe Thema zu fassen, arbeitete Hildur Guðnadóttir auf unterschiedlichsten musikalischen Ebenen eng mit Field zusammen. So schrieb sie die Partitur, an der wir Lydia Tár arbeiten sehen – »For Petra« –, schuf aber unabhängig davon auch die Filmmusik selbst, die eine Welt evoziert abseits des Musikmachens, um das es in dem Drama geht.

Die Musik von Guðnadóttir, die zum einen den psychologischen Gehalt der Geschichte, zum anderen den aufgewühlten Geisteszustand der Protagonistin spiegelt, ist beunruhigend, fast bedrohlich. Sie soll, so die Komponistin, »jenseitig sein, dieses unsichtbare Etwas haben, das in dein Unterbewusstsein dringt«. Ein ebensolches Stück ist »Mortar«, die Komponistin selbst spielt hier Cello, und Todd Field hat zur Musik ein Video gedreht. Verzerrte Sequenzen werden zum Sinnbild für die zerfallende Welt der Lydia Tár.

»Der Gedanke kam mir in Gesprächen mit Cate Blanchett«, sagt der Regisseur. »Dieses Stück Film ist wie ein Zwischenreich, in dem die Hauptfigur abzutauchen scheint. Die Gesetze des Wachzustands sind außer Kraft. Alle Darsteller:innen des Films sind dabei, wir haben das während des Drehs 2021 in Berlin und Südostasien am Ende von jedem Tag gefilmt. Im September 2022 habe ich mich erneut mit Hildur in Berlin getroffen, sie ist wieder in das Projekt eingestiegen und hat sich mit allen verbunden.«

Focus Features hat TÁR im vergangenen Monat in den USA veröffentlicht, die Kritik zeigte sich begeistert. International kommt der Film Anfang 2023 in die Kinos. Das Konzeptalbum von Deutsche Grammophon ist auf CD und digital erhältlich. Bereits in der Woche seiner Veröffentlichung erreichte es Platz 1 der Billboard Traditional Classical Albums Chart. Eine Vinyl-Edition kommt am 20. Januar 2023 heraus.

Deutsche Grammophon’s groundbreaking concept album for Todd Field’s critically acclaimed new film TÁR captures the process of music-making that lies at the heart of the film. The soundtrack features a series of stunning new works by Hildur Guðnadóttir, recorded with the London Contemporary Orchestra and conductor Robert Ames, as well as extracts from the Elgar Cello Concerto, with soloist Sophie Kauer and the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Natalie Murray Beale, and Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, with Cate Blanchett at the helm of the Dresdner Philharmonie. Field’s video for one of Guðnadóttir’s new tracks, “Mortar”, will premiere on Variety.com at 5pm CET (8am PST and 11am EST) and on DG’s YouTube channel at 6pm CET (9am PST and 12pm EST) on 10 November before being released on all platforms on 11 November.

Directed, written and produced by three-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker Todd Field, and starring two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, TÁR tells the story of composer-conductor Lydia Tár and examines the changing nature of power, its impact and durability in our modern world. DG artist and Oscar and two-time Grammy winner Hildur Guðnadóttir worked closely with Field in a wide-ranging musical role, which included writing the score on which we see Tár working (“For Petra”) and creating a soundtrack that would evoke a world separate from the music processes central to the film’s narrative.

Representing the psychological aspect of the story, and the protagonist’s troubled state of mind, Guðnadóttir’s score has an unsettling, almost unearthly feel. Its purpose, says the composer, “is to be otherworldly and to be this kind of invisible thing that seeps into your unconscious”. One of the tracks that helps build this disquieting atmosphere is “Mortar”, featuring the composer herself on cello. Todd Field has made a standalone video for the piece in which Guðnadóttir and the cast of TÁR all appear, their distorted images again mirroring Lydia Tár’s disintegrating world.

“The idea was born from conversations with Cate Blanchett,” explains the director. “This piece of film was conceived as an in-between place for the main character to fall into herself. A place where the natural laws of her waking state do not apply. The shooting process involved all cast members, and was photographed at the end of each day during principal photography in Berlin and South East Asia in 2021. In September 2022 Hildur and I met again in Berlin where she stepped back into this place and bound herself to the other players.”

Focus Features released TÁR in the US last month to widespread critical acclaim, with international release dates to follow in early 2023. Deutsche Grammophon’s concept album, available now on CD and digitally, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Traditional Classical Albums Chart. A vinyl edition will be issued on 20 January 2023.
