Ab 10. September auf Deutsche Grammophon
Peter Gregson stellt sein fünftes Studioalbum vor. Patina heißt es und ist die bislang umfangreichste Veröffentlichung des renommierten Komponisten und Cellisten, der 2018 einen Exklusivvertrag bei Deutsche Grammophon unterzeichnet hat. Die Musik, komponiert für Cello solo, analoge Synthesizer, Klavier und Streichorchester, kommt am 10. September 2021 heraus. Vorab erscheint am 28. Mai der Titeltrack, der mit stark vocodiertem Cello den erwachenden Tag einer Stadt evoziert. Das Video zur Single »Patina« ist ab dem 28. Mai exklusiv auf Apple Music zu sehen, ab dem 4. Juni erscheint es international.
Schon lange beschäftigt Gregson, was es bedeutet, dass etwas endlich ist oder abwesend im Leben. Diese mächtigen Nicht-Dinge versucht er, in seine Musik zu übersetzen. Mit seinem neuen Studioalbum fordert er sich und seine Hörer heraus und fragt: Was geschieht, wenn man eine Melodie entfernt?
»Tragende Melodien verändern ihre Bedeutung; Harmonie, Kadenz, Phrasierung nehmen eine andere Rolle ein. Aber die Blaupause der abwesenden Melodie kann immer noch empfunden werden, auch wenn sie nicht zu hören ist.
In der Aufnahme muss sich die Ehrlichkeit dieser ›Lieder ohne Worte‹ spiegeln. Ich möchte Sie, den Hörer, ganz nah an die Instrumente setzen, neben das Knacken und Kratzen des Bogens auf der Saite, die Finger auf der Tastatur, den Atem im Raum. Diese Klänge sind wie ein Buch mit ramponiertem Buchrücken und zerlesenen Seiten, wie Lieblingsschuhe, die zwar weich, aber abgetragen sind, wie Ränder, die eine Kaffeetasse auf einem Tisch hinterlassen hat. Das sind keine Makel, es sind Zeugnisse des Lebens. Im Ganzen sind diese Klänge Teil von etwas Größerem und Reflektierendem, sie erlauben es dem Hörer, das Gefüge des Klangs in der Zeit zu hören, aber auch den Raum einzunehmen, in dem dieser Klang entstanden ist. Sie sind, wie Leonard Cohen sang, Risse, durch die Licht fällt.
Patina ist eine Sammlung von Stücken, in denen die Klänge gealtert sind, in denen die Musik ein Leben gelebt hat, in denen die Reverbs schattigen, verstaubten Spalten gleichen und im Vergehen leise zerfallen. In diesem Album ist die musikalische Verzerrung keine Aggression, sondern spielt mit der Wahrnehmung des Klangs wie das Spiegelkabinett auf einem Jahrmarkt. Das Cello klingt wie eine verrauchte, whiskyschwere Stimme spät in der Nacht oder wie ein Sturm, der draußen tobt, während man selbst geschützt in einem warmen Zimmer sitzt. Alle Klänge der Musik auf diesem Album sind die Klänge eines gelebten Lebens.
Das kann mechanisch reproduziert sein – ein perfekter Schnappschuss in der Zeit, der sich nie verändert, der für immer derselbe ist –, aber Unvollkommenheiten zu akzeptieren und die alltäglichen Auswirkungen des Lebens zu schätzen ist für mich das, worum es auf Patina geht.«

Der renommierte Komponist und Cellist Peter Gregson (*1987), seit 2018 unter Vertrag bei Deutsche Grammophon, stellt sein neuestes Studioalbum vor. Patina erscheint am 10. September 2021.
Gregson ist bekannt für seine musikalische Vielseitigkeit, er hat Musik für Bühne, Leinwand und Videospiele geschrieben und vor Patina vier Studioalben veröffentlicht. Zu den jüngsten Höhepunkten seiner Karriere zählen seine Filmmusiken für Roger Michells Blackbird (mit Susan Sarandon und Kate Winslet in den Hauptrollen) und Die Gärtnerin von Versailles des verstorbenen Alan Rickman, außerdem sein gefeierter Soundtrack für das Videospiel Boundless sowie die Nutzung der Musik seines Albums Bach Recomposed in einigen der beliebtesten Fernsehserien von heute, darunter Netflixs Bridgerton und The New Pope von HBO. Sein Auftritt im vergangenen Jahr in den renommierten Capitol Studios in Hollywood wurde im Januar 2021 als digitales und visuelles Album mit dem Titel An Evening At Capitol Studios veröffentlicht, während sein neuer Track »Somnia« auf der offiziellen UMG-Playlist zum Weltschlaftag 2021 steht.
Gregson hat mit einigen der innovativsten Choreografen und Tanzkompanien der Welt zusammengearbeitet, darunter Gauthier Dance/Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart, das Joffrey Ballet (Chicago), Pennsylvania Ballet, Dutch National Ballet und Ballet BC (Vancouver). Marken wie Balenciaga, Burberry, Dior, Ralph Lauren und Pat McGrath haben seine Musik in ihren Kampagnen und Modeschauen genutzt.
Peter Gregson tritt als Solocellist auf den Bühnen der Welt auf, von der Londoner Royal Albert Hall bis zum Jazzclub in Peking, von der Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg bis zu den Capitol Studios in Hollywood.
Sein fünftes Studioalbum, das das Thema der Abwesenheit erkundet, erscheint am 10. September 2021 bei Deutsche Grammophon. Patina ist seine bis dato umfangreichste Veröffentlichung mit einer bemerkenswerten Anzahl analoger elektronischer Instrumente sowie Streicherensemble, Klavier und Cello solo.

Peter Gregson, renowned composer, cellist and Deutsche Grammophon recording artist, is set to present his fifth studio album, Patina. Scored for solo cello, analogue synthesisers, piano and string orchestra, the album will be released on 10 September 2021. As a taster, the title track – featuring heavily vocoded cello and evoking the sounds of a city waking up to a new day – will be released as a single on 28 May. The video for “Patina” will be available exclusively on Apple Music from 28 May, with a general release to follow on 4 June.
Gregson has long been fascinated with the impact of finitude and absence on life, and with trying to translate these powerful non-things into his music. Now, with his new full-length studio album on the horizon, he challenges himself and the listener with this question: what happens when you remove a melody?
“Supporting melodies change in importance; harmonies, cadence, phrasing all take on a different role. But the blueprint of the absent melody can still be felt, even if it isn’t heard.
These ‘songs without words’ are recorded to sound honest. I want to bring you, the listener, right up close to the instruments, next to the cracks and scratches of the bow on the string, the fingers on the keyboard, the breath in the room. These sounds are like your book with the creased spine and well-thumbed pages; your favourite shoes worn soft and scuffed; the stain on your table where your coffee cup sits. These are not flaws; they are evidence of life! Together these sounds sit within something much broader and reflective and so allow you not just to hear the organisation of sound in time, but to inhabit the space in which it was created too. They are, as Leonard Cohen sang, the cracks which let the light in.
This is a collection of pieces where the sounds have aged, where the music has lived a life; where the reverbs are shadowy, dusty crevices, subtly degrading as they decay. In this album, musical distortion is not used for aggression, but for playing with the perception of the sound like a trick mirror at a fairground. The cello sounds like a smokey, whisky-laced voice late at night or like listening to a storm rage outside, from the safety of a warm indoors. All of the sounds in all of the music on this album are the sounds of a life that has been lived.
This may be mechanically reproduced – a perfect snapshot in time, never changing, the same forever – but accepting imperfections and appreciating the everyday impact of life is, for me, what Patina is all about.”

Peter Gregson (b.1987) is a renowned Composer, Cellist, and Deutsche Grammophon recording artist set to release his fifth studio album ‘Patina’ on September 10th 2021.
His music is regularly sought out by the most exciting choreographers and dance companies in the world, recently including Theaterhaus Stuttgart / Gauthier Dance, Joffrey Ballet, PA Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, and Ballet BC.
Amongst his film credits, Roger Michell’s ‘Blackbird’ (starring Kate Winslet and Susan Sarandon) and the late Alan Rickman’s ‘A Little Chaos’ as well as the Soundtrack for the popular video game ‘Boundless’ receiving critical acclaim.
His music has featured on some of the most popular TV series – from Netflix’s hit ‘Bridgeton’ to HBO’s ‘The New Pope’ by Paolo Sorrentino. Brands including Balenciaga, Burberry, Dior, Ralph Lauren, Pat McGrath have all featured Gregson’s music in recent campaigns and runway shows.
As a cellist, he has performed all around world, from The Royal Albert Hall in London to a jazz club in Beijing; from the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg to Capitol Studios in Hollywood, which was filmed and released in January 2021.
He is a prolific artist, most recently releasing the stunning ‘Somina’ which was commissioned for ‘World Sleep Day’.
‘Patina’ is his most expansive and expressive work to date, featuring an astonishing array of analogue electronics instruments, a string ensemble and his unique solo cello, brought together to explore the theme of absence.
