Im April 2022 erschien The Turning Year, das Solodebüt von Roger Eno bei Deutsche Grammophon. Der britische Komponist hat das Repertoire später auf drei EPs erweitert. Zu hören waren neue Bearbeitungen sowie bisher unveröffentlichte Kleinode der einstigen Aufnahmesitzungen. Rarities · Piano kam im September letzten Jahres heraus, Rarities · Bells im November und die letzte der drei EPs, Rarities · Quartets, am 10. Februar. Jetzt erscheinen all diese Kompositionen sowie ein brandneuer Bonustrack, »Moving Chords«, auf Vinyl und digital. Rarities wird am 21. April 2023 veröffentlicht, genau ein Jahr nach The Turning Year.

Das Projekt stellt mehrere Klavierwerke vor, selbst gespielt von Eno, darunter die Soloklavierversion des einst titelgebenden »The Turning Year«. »Licht und Dunkel kommen darin zusammen«, sagt der Musiker, »etwas, womit ich häufig arbeite.« Die bislang unveröffentlichten Stücke »Or So I’ve Read« und »Softly« widmen sich ein und demselben musikalischen Stoff aus auffallend unterschiedlichen Perspektiven. Kontrastiert werden sie von Stücken, die in Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Künstlern entstanden: Ein Gefühl der Sehnsucht ist in »Still Day« zu spüren, der wehmütigen Improvisation der Geigerin Rosie Toll. Und das Stück »Bells« erklingt nicht nur auf Konzertflügel, sondern auch in den markanten Stimmen von Rogers Töchtern, Cecily und Lotti. Cecily, die das ganze Projekt grafisch gestaltet hat, sagt über das Stück: »Die Vocals von ›Bells‹ waren ursprünglich eine Improvisation mit dekontextualisierten Wörtern und Sätzen aus einigen von Rogers Gedichten. Das Musikstück war vollendet, mir war es deshalb wichtig, dass die neuen Stimmen die Atmosphäre nicht überlagern.«

Und schließlich sind vier Musiker des Ensembles Scoring Berlin zu hören, bereits für The Turning Year hatte Eno mit ihnen zusammengearbeitet. Das Quartett spielt hier drei neue Versionen des ruhigen, melancholischen »Slow Motion« und die ebenfalls neue Komposition »Venerable Dilemma«.

Die Musik auf Rarities schöpft aus dem Stoff, aus dem Enos Leben ist, sowohl seine Familie als auch seine Heimat East Anglia finden ein musikalisches Echo. »In der Gegend, in der ich lebe, gibt es viele einsame mittelalterliche Kirchen«, sagt der Komponist. »Nicht selten sind sie offen für Menschen, die wie ich die Stille suchen.«

Following the release in April 2022 of The Turning Year, his solo debut album for Deutsche Grammophon, British composer Roger Eno was keen to expand and reimagine its repertoire. He went on to create a series of three EPs presenting a mix of illuminating reworks, previously unreleased tracks and gems from the album sessions. Rarities · Piano was issued last September and Rarities · Bells in November, while the last of the three, Rarities · Quartets, came out on 10 February. Now the complete Rarities material, along with the brand-new bonus track “Moving Chords”, is set to be released on vinyl and as a digital album. Rarities will come out on 21 April 2023, the first  anniversary of The Turning Year.

The Rarities project presents several works performed by Roger at the piano, including a solo piano version of “The Turning Year”, about which the composer says, “it has a curious mix of light and darkness, a mix I am constantly striving to work with”. Meanwhile, the previously unreleased “Or So I’ve Read” and “Softly” explore shared musical material from strikingly different perspectives.

Contrast with the solo piano pieces comes from tracks produced in collaboration with other artists; a sense of yearning can be felt on “Still Day”, transcribed from an improvisation by violinist Rosie Toll, whilst as well as a solo grand-piano version of “Bells”, listeners can also enjoy an alternative version featuring the striking duetting voices of Roger’s daughters, Cecily and Lotti.  

His daughter Cecily, who steered the visual aesthetic of this whole project as well, made this comment about the song: “The vocals [of ‘Bells’] began life as an improvisation using decontextualised words and phrases from some of Roger’s poetry. It was already a complete piece of music, so I wanted to be careful that any added vocals didn’t crowd the existing atmosphere.”

The final guest artists on Rarities are four members of Scoring Berlin, the string ensemble who appeared on some of the Turning Year tracks. The quartet perform three reimagined versions of the unhurried “Slow Motion” and a stunning new composition, “Venerable Dilemma”.

All the Rarities tracks draw on the various strands of Eno’s life. As well as his family and friends these include the landscape and the history of his native East Anglia – its vast horizons, its peaceful country lanes and waterways, and its ancient architecture, all evoking echoes from a distant past. “The area in which I live is blessed with isolated medieval churches, many of which are open to those who wish for silence, such as myself,” says the composer.
