Gramophone in einer Besprechung von Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 2 · Scherzi
Es ist die Verbindung von gedanklicher Tiefe und Ausdruck, durch die Seong-Jin Cho sein Publikum berührt. Die musikalische Reife und die künstlerischen Fähigkeiten des preisgekrönten Pianisten sicherten ihm breite Zustimmung des Publikums und der Kritik. Das Wall Street Journal feierte ihn als »Meister der virtuosen Miniatur«, aber er erhielt ebenso viel Beifall für seine ausdrucksvollen Interpretationen von Konzerten und großen Solowerken verschiedenster Komponisten von Mozart bis Schostakowitsch.
Der südkoreanische Pianist wurde schlagartig weltberühmt, als er im Oktober 2015 den ersten Preis beim 17. Internationalen Chopin-Wettbewerb gewann. Als Deutsche Grammophon sofort Mitschnitte von Chos Wettbewerbsaufführungen herausbrachte, sprang das reine Chopin-Album allein durch seine Vorbestellungen auf Platz 1 der südkoreanischen Pop-Charts. Es schaffte innerhalb einer Woche nach Erscheinen im November 2015 in Südkorea Verkaufszahlen von Dreifach-Platin und hatte schon bald eine weltweite Fangemeinde. Im Januar 2016 unterzeichnete Cho einen Exklusivvertrag mit Deutsche Grammophon.
Sein erstes Studio-Album für das gelbe Label, das im November 2016 erschien, bot noch mehr Chopin – die vier Balladen und das Klavierkonzert Nr. 1 in e-Moll, aufgenommen mit dem London Symphony Orchestra und Gianandrea Noseda. Chos nächstes Album mit einem reinen Debussy-Programm erschien im November 2017 anlässlich des 100. Geburtstags des Komponisten im Jahr 2018. Er spielte neben den beiden Serien von Images auch L’Isle joyeuse, Suite bergamasque und Children’s Corner.
Ein Jahr später folgte Chos Mozart-Album mit den Sonaten KV 281 und KV 332 sowie dem Konzert Nr. 20 in d-Moll KV 466 mit Yannick Nézet-Séguin und dem Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Das im Mai 2020 erschienene Album The Wanderer beginnt mit Schuberts gewaltiger »Wanderer-Fantasie« D 760 und schließt mit Liszts legendärer Sonate in h-Moll, einem Werk, dessen Dimension und Komplexität den Einfluss der »Wanderer-Fantasie« erkennen lassen. Dazwischen steht Bergs Klaviersonate op. 1, die ihrerseits Liszt verpflichtet ist. Auf Im Abendrot ist Seong-Jin Cho gemeinsam mit Matthias Goerne zu hören, einem der renommiertesten Liedsänger der Welt. Das im April 2021 veröffentlichte Album bietet spätromantische Werke von Wagner, Pfitzner und Richard Strauss, Chos Spiel sei »Inbegriff opulenten Feingefühls«, schrieb Gramophone. Im selben Jahr arbeitete Cho auch wieder mit dem LSO und Gianandrea Noseda zusammen, um sich weiter in die Musik Chopins zu vertiefen. Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 2 · Scherzi erschien im August 2021, mit drei zusätzlichen Solotracks auf der digitalen Version: die »Revolutionsetüde« op. 10 Nr. 12, das Impromptu op. 29 und das Nocturne op. 9 Nr. 2.
Auf seinem neuesten im Februar 2022 erscheinenden Album wendet Seong-Jin Cho sich nun dem Barock zu. Für The Handel Project wählte er drei Stücke aus Händels erster Sammlung von Suites de pièces pour le clavecin aus und koppelt sie mit Brahms’ Variationen und Fuge über ein Thema von Händel.
1994 in Seoul geboren, begann Seong-Jin Cho mit sechs Jahren Klavier zu spielen, und mit 11 Jahren trat er erstmals öffentlich auf. Im September 2008 gewann er in Moskau den 6. Internationalen Chopin-Wettbewerb für Nachwuchspianisten und im Jahr darauf den Internationalen Hamamatsu-Klavierwettbewerb in Japan. Nachdem er 2012 nach Paris gezogen war, um am dortigen Conservatoire bei Michel Béroff zu studieren, hat er jetzt seinen Wohnsitz in Berlin.
Den Weg zu seinem Sieg beim ruhmreichen Internationalen Chopin-Wettbewerb ebneten jeweils dritte Preise beim Tschaikowsky-Wettbewerb 2011 in Moskau und beim Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition 2014 sowie Konzertauftritte mit führenden Dirigenten und Orchestern. Cho arbeitet seitdem regelmäßig mit bedeutenden Musikern wie Vladimir Ashkenazy, Myung-Whun Chung, Gustavo Dudamel, Valery Gergiev, Vasily Petrenko, Mikhail Pletnev, Esa-Pekka Salonen und Yuri Temirkanov sowie internationalen Spitzenorchestern wie den Berliner Philharmonikern, dem Los Angeles Philharmonic, Concertgebouworkest, Mariinski-Orchester, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Philharmonia Orchestra und Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Geplant für 2023 sind unter anderem ein Recital in der Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles und Auftritte mit dem Brahms Konzert in Washington und Philadelphia im Januar; Recitals mit dem Repertoire von The Handel Project in Hannover, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Dortmund, London, Mailand, Berlin und Wien im Februar; und die Uraufführung von Thierry Escaichs Études symphoniques für Klavier und Orchester in Prag im März.

Intense reflection and expressive insight are among the attributes cultivated by Seong-Jin Cho, qualities apt to connect with audiences at the deepest levels of imagination and emotion. The award-winning pianist has won widespread public and critical acclaim for his mature musicianship and refined artistry in an extensive range of repertoire. Hailed by the Wall Street Journal as “a master of the virtuosic miniature”, he has received equal praise for his eloquent readings of concertos and larger-scale solo works by composers from Mozart to Shostakovich.
The South Korean pianist was catapulted to fame when he won First Prize at the 17th Chopin International Piano Competition in October 2015. When Deutsche Grammophon rush-released performances recorded live during the Competition, the all-Chopin album was propelled to the No. 1 spot in the Korean pop chart on the strength of pre-release orders alone. Having secured triple platinum sales in Korea within a week of its release in November 2015, it rapidly went on to attract a worldwide following. Cho signed an exclusive contract with DG in January 2016.
His first studio album for the Yellow Label, released in November 2016, featured more music by Chopin: the Four Ballades, and the Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra and Gianandrea Noseda. Next came an all-Debussy affair: Images I and II, L’isle joyeuse, the Suite bergamasque and Children’s Corner, released in November 2017, in time to mark the composer’s centenary in 2018.
A year later Cho released an album of works by Mozart – Sonatas K281 and K332, and Concerto No. 20 in D minor K466, for which he was joined by Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. This was followed in May 2020 by The Wanderer, which opens with Schubert’s mighty Wanderer Fantasy D760, and closes with Liszt’s legendary Sonata in B minor, a work whose scale and complexity reveal the influence of the Wanderer Fantasy. Framed by these is Berg’s Piano Sonata, Op. 1, indebted in turn to Liszt.
For his next recording he teamed up with Matthias Goerne, one of the world’s most renowned Lieder singers, to perform a selection of late Romantic works by Wagner, Pfitzner and Richard Strauss. Im Abendrot was released in April 2021, Gramophone hailing Cho’s playing as “a model of luxurious sensitivity”. The pianist then reunited with the LSO and Gianandrea Noseda to continue his exploration of the music of Chopin. Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 2 · Scherzi was released in August 2021, the digital version featuring three bonus solo tracks: the “Revolutionary” Étude, Op. 10 no. 12, Impromptu No. 1, Op. 29 and Nocturne, Op. 9 no. 2.
For his latest album, The Handel Project, Cho has turned to the Baroque, recording three suites from Handel’s first collection of Suites de pièces pour le clavecin. He pairs these with Brahms’s creative response to music by the same composer: the Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel. The Handel Project will be released on 3 February 2023.
Born in Seoul on 28 May 1994, Seong-Jin Cho began playing piano at the age of six and gave his first public performance at eleven. In September 2008 he won the Sixth Moscow International Frederick Chopin Competition for Young Pianists and the following year took First Prize at the Hamamatsu International Piano Competition in Japan. Having moved to Paris in 2012 to study with Michel Béroff at the Conservatoire, he is now based in Berlin.
Paving the way to Cho’s victory at the prestigious Chopin International Piano Competition were Third Prize successes at the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and the 2014 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition, as well as concerto dates with leading conductors and orchestras. He continues to perform on a regular basis with such eminent figures as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Myung-Whun Chung, Gustavo Dudamel, Valery Gergiev, Vasily Petrenko, Mikhail Pletnev, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Yuri Temirkanov, and major international orchestras including the Berliner Philharmoniker, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Mariinsky Orchestra, NHK Symphony, Orchestre de Paris, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
His plans for the New Year include a recital at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and Brahms concerto performances in Washington and Philadelphia (January 2023); recitals featuring some of the repertoire from The Handel Project in Hanover, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Dortmund, London, Milan, Berlin and Vienna (February); and the world premiere of Thierry Escaich’s Études symphoniques for piano and orchestra in Prague (March).

C’est en premier lieu avec deux qualités que le pianiste sud-coréen Seong-Jin Cho touche le public dans les couches les plus profondes de l’imagination et de l’émotion : une intense réflexion et un sens de l’expression. La maturité musicale et l’art raffiné dont il fait preuve dans un large répertoire lui valent un vaste succès public et les louanges de la critique. Qualifié de « maître de la miniature virtuose » par le Wall Street Journal, il recueille des compliments tout aussi flatteurs pour ses interprétations éloquentes de concertos et de grandes pages pour piano seul de divers compositeurs, depuis Mozart jusqu’à Chostakovitch.
C’est son premier prix au dix-septième Concours Chopin de Varsovie, en octobre 2015, qui le propulse sur le devant de la scène. Ses prestations au concours font l’objet d’un disque Chopin, commercialisé par Deutsche Grammophon dès novembre 2015, qui bondit en haut du palmarès pop des meilleures ventes en Corée grâce à une forte pré-commande avant d’atteindre le statut de triple platine en l’espace d’une semaine puis de conquérir des admirateurs dans le monde entier. En janvier 2016, Seong-Jin Cho signe en exclusivité chez DG.
Son premier album DG en studio, sorti en novembre 2016, poursuit dans la veine Chopin : y figurent les quatre Ballades et le Premier Concerto en mi mineur, enregistré avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Londres et Gianandrea Noseda. Suit un disque Debussy en novembre 2017, pour marquer le centenaire de la mort du compositeur français, en 2018, où les deux livres d’Images côtoient L’Isle joyeuse, la Suite bergamasque et Children’s Corner.
Un an plus tard paraît un album Mozart réunissant les Sonates K. 281 et K. 332 et le Concerto no 20 en ré mineur, dans lequel le pianiste est accompagné par Yannick Nézet-Séguin et l’Orchestre de chambre d’Europe. En mai 2020 sort The Wanderer, qui s’ouvre sur la puissante Wanderer-Fantasie de Schubert et s’achève sur la monumentale Sonate en si mineur de Liszt, celle-ci se plaçant dans le sillage de celle-là par son envergure et sa complexité. Au centre, la Sonate de Berg, elle-même redevable à Liszt.
Dans l’album suivant, Im Abendrot, sorti en avril 2021, Cho interprète des pages de Wagner, Pfitzner et Richard Strauss avec Matthias Goerne, l’un des chanteurs de lied les plus renommés. Gramophone salut le jeu du pianiste, « un modèle de brillante sensibilité ». Cho retrouve ensuite l’Orchestre symphonique de Londres et Gianandrea Noseda pour un nouveau disque Chopin qui paraît en août 2021. Au programme cette fois-ci, le Deuxième Concerto et les Scherzos. S’y ajoutent trois bonus dans la version numérique : l’Étude « révolutionnaire » op. 10 no 12, le Premier Impromptu et le Nocturne op. 9 no 2.
Le dernier album en date de Cho, The Handel Project, se tourne vers la musique baroque : y figurent trois suites du premier livre de Suites de pièces pour le clavecin de Haendel, auxquelles le pianiste a ajouté la réponse de Brahms au compositeur baroque, les Variations et Fugue sur un thème de Haendel. Cet album sortira le 3 février 2023.

Il continue de se produire avec de grands chefs – Vladimir Ashkenazy, Myung-Whun Chung, Gustavo Dudamel, Valery Gergiev, Vasily Petrenko, Mikhail Pletnev, Esa-Pekka Salonen et Yuri Temirkanov – et de brillants orchestres – le Philharmonique de Berlin, le Philharmonique de Los Angeles, l’Orchestre du Mariinsky, l’Orchestre de la NHK, l’Orchestre de Paris, le Philharmonia Orchestra, le Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam et le Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Parmi ses projets pour l’année 2023 figurent : en janvier, un récital au Walt Disney Concert Hall de Los Angeles, le Premier Concerto de Brahms à Washington et le Deuxième à Philadelphie ; en février, des récitals reprenant le programme du Handel Project à Hanovre, Düsseldorf, Hambourg, Dortmund, Londres, Milan, Berlin et Vienne ; en mars, la création mondiale, à Prague, des Études symphoniques pour piano et orchestre de Thierry Escaich.
