Víkingur Ólafssons neueste Aufnahme für Deutsche Grammophon stürmt die Charts. Am 6. Oktober 2023 veröffentlichte der isländische Pianist Bachs Goldberg-Variationen, heute steht das Album in Deutschland auf Platz 10 der Popcharts. Es erobert außerdem Platz 1 des Billboard Traditional Classical Albums Chart in den Vereinigten Staaten sowie der Klassikcharts in Großbritannien, Frankreich und Belgien. Zudem gelangt es auf Platz 6 des allgemeinen Billboard Classical Chart in den USA und Platz 17 der Schweizer Hitliste. Ólafssons Interpretation wurde bereits millionenfach gestreamt, mit allein 2,5 Millionen Streams der Aria.

Der isländische Pianist ist derzeit auf Welttournee mit dem Repertoire. Auf sechs Kontinenten widmet er sich in der gegenwärtigen Saison ausschließlich dieser Komposition, zur Begeisterung von Publikum und Presse: »Eine hypnotische Lesart – weit mehr als die Summe ihrer 32 Teile«, urteilte der Guardian über seine Interpretation in der Royal Festival Hall in London im September und inews.co.uk schrieb über den Auftritt: »Makellos im Anschlag und bedacht beim Einsatz des Pedals, verwies Ólafsson auf harmonische oder rhythmische Eigenheiten des Werks, ergänzte gekonnt Verzierungen, erzeugte einen Klang, der fast an eine Kirchenorgel denken ließ, erspürte schlüssige Verbindungen zwischen aufeinanderfolgenden Variationen … Angesichts der spontanen Standing Ovations im vollbesetzten Haus schien der Geist vieler auf herrliche Weise erfrischt.« Auch aus der Ferne ist Ólafsson zu erleben: Am 15. Víkingur Ólafsson’s latest Deutsche Grammophon recording has gone straight into the German pop charts at No. 10. Released on 6 October, his visionary reading of Johann Sebastian Bach’s monumental Goldberg Variations is also No. 1 in the Billboard Traditional Classical Albums chart and in the UK, French and Belgian classical charts, No. 6 in the Billboard overall Classical chart and No. 17 in the overall charts in Switzerland. It has already garnered several million streams, with the Aria alone having been streamed over 2.5 million times.  

The Icelandic pianist is currently two months into a six-continent, season-long tour of the Goldberg Variations, earning huge audience ovations and critical acclaim wherever he goes. Those not lucky enough to attend a concert in person will be able to enjoy a livestreamed performance from Seoul on STAGE+ on 15 December 2023.

Writing about his performance at London’s Royal Festival Hall on 22 September, The Guardian hailed “a hypnotic reading that added up to considerably more than the sum of the work’s 32 parts,” adding, “in the heat of the moment Ólafsson was breathtakingly organic. Original touches were legion.”

Reviewing the same concert, inews.co.uk wrote, “With flawless voicing and intelligently applied pedalling, he pointed up harmonic or rhythmic quirks, added idiomatic embellishments, created a resonance virtually suggesting a church organ or found revelatory emotional connections between successive variations … Given the spontaneous standing ovation from a packed house, it seemed that many spirits had been gloriously refreshed here.”
