Seong-Jin Cho veröffentlicht bei Deutsche Grammophon eine Deluxe-Edition seiner meisterhaften Interpretationen von Ravels gesamtem Werk für Klavier solo sowie seiner beiden Klavierkonzerte. Pünktlich zum 150. Geburtstag des Komponisten (7. März) erscheint sein brillanter Livemitschnitt von Jeux d’eau als Stream und Download. Das Stück ist auch auf seinem im Januar erschienenen Album mit sämtlichen Werken für Klavier solo zu hören (»Jeux d’eau perlt durch Chos Finger wie Wasser selbst« – The Times). Im vergangenen Monat kamen zudem Chos Interpretationen der beiden Klavierkonzerte heraus, aufgenommen mit dem Boston Symphony Orchestra unter Leitung von Andris Nelsons.

Die Deluxe-Edition mit beiden Alben erscheint am 2. Mai 2025 sowohl digital als auch als limitierte 3-CD-Veröffentlichung. Letztere enthält ein Hardcover-Buch mit allen Titeleien und Erläuterungen zur Musik, außerdem hochwertige Kunstdrucke bisher unveröffentlichter Fotos sowie das Angebot eines dreimonatigen kostenlosen Zugangs zu STAGE+. Fans können dort unter anderem Seong-Jin Chos bemerkenswertes Ravel-Recital in der Carnegie Hall erleben. Eine Sonderausgabe mit einem signierten Foto des Künstlers ist exklusiv im DG Shop erhältlich.

Chos Ravel-Interpretationen begeisterten die Kritik. Der NDR kürte die erste Veröffentlichung zum Album der Woche, eine »atemberaubende Aufnahme«. »Es ist faszinierend, wie er die verschiedenen, sich oft überlagernden Schichten von Ravels Klangkosmos mit einer unendlichen Palette an Farben und Anschlagsnuancen verdeutlicht«, urteilte der Sender und ergänzt: »Vor allem zieht Cho niemals eine Show ab – er nimmt sich zurück, bei ihm geht es nur um die Musik.« Und die Financial Times konstatiert: »Ein Ravel-Spiel von solcher Perfektion im Detail erlebt man nicht oft.«

An diesem Wochenende (7.−9. März) spielt Cho das Klavierkonzert in G-Dur mit dem Cleveland Orchestra. Im April und Mai bringt er sein einzigartiges Programm mit allen Soloklavierwerken ins Londoner Barbican Centre und in verschiedene Konzertsäle in Deutschland, insbesondere in die Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg und die Berliner Philharmonie. Am 12. Juli wird er erneut mit Nelsons und dem BSO zusammenkommen, um beide Konzerte im Koussevitzky Music Shed in Tanglewood aufzuführen. Am 16. Juli präsentiert er die kompletten Soloklavierwerke überdies in der Ozawa Hall in Tanglewood. Weitere Termine in Asien und den USA folgen im Laufe des Sommers.

Deutsche Grammophon is pleased to announce the forthcoming release of a deluxe edition of Seong‑Jin Cho’s new recordings of Ravel’s complete solo piano works and two piano concertos. The pianist marks the composer’s birth exactly 150 years ago today (7 March 2025) with the release of a sparkling live reading of Jeux d’eau for streaming/download. The piece also features on his album of the complete solo works (“Jeux d’eau trickles brightly through Cho’s fingers like water itself” – The Times), which came out in January. Last month saw the release of a companion album, featuring Cho’s recordings of the two piano concertos with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Andris Nelsons.

Due for release on 2 May 2025, the deluxe version brings together both albums and will be available digitally and as a limited-edition 3-CD set. The latter includes a hardcover book with full tracklistings and notes on the music; high-quality art prints of previously unreleased photos; and the offer of three months’ free access to STAGE+, where fans will find Seong-Jin Cho’s now legendary Carnegie Hall Ravel recital, among other filmed performances and audio albums. A version which also includes a signed photo of the artist can be purchased from the DG Shop.

Cho’s Ravel interpretations have already garnered rave reviews. German broadcaster NDR named the first release its “breathtaking” album of the week. It hailed the way Cho “clarifies the different, often overlapping layers of Ravel’s soundworld with an infinite palette of colours and nuances of touch”, before concluding: “Above all, there is nothing showy about Cho … for him, it’s all about the music.” The Financial Times, meanwhile, summed up Cho’s achievements by saying, “Ravel playing of such perfection of detail does not come round often”.

This weekend (7–9 March), Cho performs the Piano Concerto in G major with The Cleveland Orchestra. In April and May he brings his solo marathon to London’s Barbican Centre and venues throughout Germany, notably Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie and the Berlin Philharmonie. He will reunite with Nelsons and the BSO to perform both concertos on 12 July at Tanglewood’s Koussevitzky Music Shed. On 16 July he will perform the complete solo piano works at Tanglewood’s Ozawa Hall. Further dates follow in Asia and the US through the summer.
